16 year old Dane Cato Poulsen made a big impression last weekend at the opening rounds of the 2016 Tiedeman Trophy Series at the Rockingham Speedway, dominating the proceedings with two wins in his GulfSport Firman RFR F1000 car in which he had won the UAE Formula Gulf National Single Seater Championship. He was teamed up with the the Formula Gulf Vice Champion, Omar Gazzaz, who himself claimed two Rockingham podiums in a second GulfSport Firman, both of which cars were run by the GulfSport Racing team who flew in from Dubai.
Not having previously experienced a "standing start", Poulsen (pole) stalled on the green light to resume the race in last place from whence he proceeded to pass every car to take the chequered flag and the win with a new Monoposto lap record for the circuit. A similar fate befell Gazzaz on the start, but he too recovered well to finish 3rd behind the Lola F3 car of James Drew-Williams.
Similar starts from both drivers occured in race 2 where again an exciting race ensued with Poulsen once more securing the win and Gazzaz in third, having suffered a 10 second penalty which demoted him from his second place finish on the road.
